What changes the price

• Volume. Movers price by the amount of furniture and boxes, not only by bedrooms.
• Distance. Fuel, driver time and return journeys add to long moves.
• Access. Stairs without a lift, long carries from the van and tight streets add time.
• Date. Fridays, month ends and school holidays cost more than midweek days.
• Extras. Packing, dismantling and rebuilding furniture, pianos and storage are usually charged separately.

For a small move, a man and van is often cheaper. Companies charge by the hour with a two-hour minimum. Check whether fuel and a second mover are included. For a flat with a few large items, a two-person crew usually finishes faster and costs less than one person working for twice as long.

How to pay less without losing quality

1. Move midweek and in the middle of the month.
2. Declutter before the survey. Fewer items means a smaller van.
3. Pack your own boxes and keep fragile items for the mover.
4. Make sure the van can park close to both doors, and apply for a parking bay if needed.
