Moving house checklist: 8 weeks to moving day
MoveNear editorial team · Updated 2026-10-27 · 7 min read
A calm move starts with a timeline. This checklist works backwards from moving day. You can tick it off in the guides section.
8 weeks before
- Request quotes from two or three movers and compare what each includes.
- Check your tenancy or completion date and give notice where needed.
- Start decluttering. Sell, donate or recycle what you will not take.
4 weeks before
- Accept a quote and confirm the date and crew size in writing.
- Ask your council about a parking bay suspension for the van.
- Order packing materials and start packing rooms you rarely use.
- Tell your employer, bank, doctor and dentist your new address.
2 weeks before
- Set up a Royal Mail redirection.
- Update your address with DVLA, HMRC, insurers and pension providers.
- Book broadband for the new home and arrange to close or move old accounts.
- Book lift access if you live in a block of flats.
The week before
- Defrost the freezer and disconnect appliances.
- Pack an essentials box: kettle, chargers, medication, toiletries and a first set of bedding.
- Confirm arrival time with the crew leader.
Moving day
- Keep keys, documents and valuables with you.
- Walk each room with the crew leader before they leave.
- Take meter readings at both addresses and photograph them.
After the move
- Check the inventory and report any damage to the mover straight away, in writing.
- Register with local services and update your electoral roll details.
- Leave a review for the mover so the next customer can choose with confidence.
